About Sabrina K. Photography:

Welcome to my blog! I'm Sabrina Koogler, and I love photography! I always have my nose in a photography book, camera to my face, working on a challenge, workshop, or contest (in between sessions and processing!) becoming the best photographer I can be! I used to teach high school Spanish, and now I'm a stay-at-home mom to two adorable, rascally boys. Sabrina K Photography is my third baby, born of the need to document all of the milestones, wild times, and quiet moments of my children and others. My style is fun and natural. I seek to document the authentic "you" in my images. I offer custom portraiture in the Houston area, and I'm based in Pearland. I enjoy working with natural light and studio lighting--it's fun having a dual-sort of personality! And it certainly keeps things interesting!

    A special surprise

    Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Sometimes you get to be a part of something that’s really, really special. And that was this session.

Mom and Dad were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, and their three lovely daughters planned an amazing, fantastic weekend getaway for the whole family down at a beach house in Galveston. That alone is a super huge feat of coordination (and also celebrating one of the daughter’s birthdays in there as well–yeah, they were busy!)! But to top things off, the girls got the idea to have a family portrait made–as a surprise.  Special, right? I mean, really special.  But what makes this really, really, really special is that Dad thought (as the family photog) that *he* was going to be the one taking the family portrait. Tripod, remote, everybody smile. I said smile! (Trust me–if you haven’t tried to take a family self-portrait this is stressful. I have in no way mastered being able to be in the picture and not look like I’m still taking the picture. Trust me, it’s stressful!) So the daughter who had contacted me (who I know through our awesome church, Crosspoint) worked with me to make it *such* a surprise for Mom and Dad when it came time for the good ol’ family portrait.  So the plan was for the family to show up, ready for Dad to take the pictures and then I would just pop out of the dunes. Okay, not really, but as they arrived at the designated spot, I was tooling around on the beach, snapping away at shells and interesting seaweed and trying to sneak up on sand crabs when the whole family comes down to the beach. Dad carrying camera bag, tripod, remote.  Stressful! And I can see he’s checking out what I’m doing. .. what kind of camera I’m using (because, let’s face it, we all do that with other photographers in the vicinity!) and then SURPRISE! The daughters announce that he is off the hook for the family portrait! They’ve hired someone to come in and let him relax! It was a pretty cool moment!
And it was a pretty awesome session! This family is super awesome. I have to confess that I’m planning on kidnapping the parents and making them adopt me, they’re that cool. (No offense to my own Mom and Dad, of course! Love you!)
So here’s the family sneak peek. In my mind’s eye this is a total black and white session, but some nice warm tones are growing on me!
So enjoy! Feel the love! I could and want to sneak the whole session but I also want to get this to everyone ASAP!
What a great family! Thanks again, everyone!
Starting off with Mom and Dad. Celebrating a milestone. Big pink puffy heart love their connection!
And if you know me, you know I can’t resist a beach silhouette. With shadows. And a tiny bit of a sun star/flare. Gasp. Love.
So here was the boss of the show:
Little man just turned two years old and this day was the first day he was really “into” playing in the sand and getting pretty dirty! It was so fun to see how fascinated he was with playing in the dirt!
One of my “I’m trying not to look conspicuous” photos from prior to the session and the three lovely daughters who put the whole weekend together. Gorgeous family!
And can I just pause to say that I was SO impressed with how willing to get sandy everyone was! I mean, not just the two-year-old! The whole family was really up for an adventure! Thank you all!
Okay, this one would be a canvas on my wall. Seriously.
And the little guy cracks me up with how completely content he was with what he was doing. I think he was pretty oblivious of the rest of us at this point!
I usually ask ahead of time if families are “huggy” families, but I had not asked this group so I was worried up until about a microsecond after meeting everyone that they would be relaxed and easily enough convinced to get in close and act like they liked each other. Piece of cake!
After a little while we got in the water and kicked and splashed a little bit. Then I asked the group to jump. And then jump again with some “flair”.  Very impressive jumping!
Again, love their connection. A parting shot.
Thanks again for a wonderful session! Can’t wait to have the rest up to you soon!

    Birthday Delay

    Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Okay, well, I cannot believe it has been almost a month since my last post. Yikes! It’s certainly not from a lack of sessions–I’ve been super busy catching up! I just have been spending any extra time on some family projects and celebrations, namely a certain four-year-old birthday.

And, preparing for this post, I have to admit that maybe I’m going a little overboard. You can be the judge if you hang in there!

Okay so everything started with the theme of the party. Even before we were having a party, my big guy started discussing the theme. For a loong time, it was going to be a “Batman+fish” theme. “Holy, carp, Batman! Zane’s turning FOUR!”.  He really wanted to get some fish again for his birthday. And to continue being Batman. Have I told you he went through a phase where he introduced himself as Batman to everyone? Some people seriously refer to me as “Batman’s mom”. But I digress. . .

As the big day approached, he had a change of heart and wanted a Star Wars theme. And when we (finally) decided to have a party at a venue (many thanks to my husband for coming up with that solution!), they also decorated with Star Wars theme if you wanted. Sweet! It was awesome. Here’s the invitation I spent a whole afternoon designing. A whole morning begging, pleading, and cajoling for him to pose for the tiny portraits. Oh, how callous youth can be!

Okay, my watermark stamp snuck in on the left side. Obviously not supposed to be there, but if I lose momentum posting this to go back and change the file I may never post again, so pressing on!

We had the party at the Pearland Recreation Center and Natatorium. It was a great experience, and I highly recommend it! You can do the play room like we did, the pool, or some other older kid options. Very fun and EASY!

So I had this vision of creating a photo booth for Z and his friends at the party and they could wear silly glasses or smiles or Star Wars masks. Of course, I had to SEW the silly thing before I could use it. And then do some individual portraits with the Z-man before the party:

Here he is embracing his inner cheese smile.  He’s wearing his matching “robot” shirt that I sewed a patch on to match the background.  Which he absolutely loved to wear for one day. That he treasured it for that long meant the world to me.

His favorite toy (up until the party, when he got a “real” Clone Trooper blaster and now it has been replaced). As you can see, this toy of his own creation has had some wear and tear over the past year and a half or so since it became the “lovey”. And I might have changed him out of his swimsuit for this portrait, but chillaxin’ in the swim trunks is so him at this age.

Of course, we had to try out the silly masks before the party.

Then it was time for the good stuff. The baking, I mean.

I am pretty bizarre about baking and feel like it should all be from scratch. I’m nuts like that. I went through seven sticks of butter making a small cake, cupcakes, and then banana nut bread (when I realized we did not have enough cupcakes). I also realized I had donated most of my baking pans when we moved so my gorgeous two-layer cake turned into cupcakes and a small pitiful cakelet for the boy. Oh well! It all tasted good!

Anakin and Ahsoka were defending the yummy icing from little fingers!

Cupcakes. They do not travel well in slippery aluminum pans!

And then it was time to party!

The venue had a party room and then a huge area with tons of balls and mats and hula hoops and fun stuff for the kids to play with. Kids of all ages had a great time!

Then time for photo booth pics. I don’t have model releases, so I’ll keep this short. This one is particularly special:

We have a pictures of these two droids, er, kiddos, from the night Zane was born.  We’re lucky to have such great friends!

And then, the moment everyone was waiting for:

    CAKE!

    Making a wish…

Certain all his dreams will come true!

And in the final moments of the party, one of my good friends asked if anyone had taken a picture of me with Zane. Umm, no! So we rocked it on auto and got a shot! Of me!

Of course, I can’t forget about #2. He was in full swing for the party as well.

The poor second child. Oh the shame we subject him to! And, yes, if you remember, this is the same yoda hat he wore last year for Halloween. Slightly tighter on that noggin this time around!

So we wrapped up the party and then it was time for his actual portraits on his birth-DAY.

We braved the fire ants and heat for these:

I just had this made into a 20X30 gallery wrap. My husband asks: “Do you think we are making our children narcissistic?”  Umm…probably not. Maybe?

This was a new location. Worked pretty well.

I think this was right before the fire ants attacked.

So we went over to a bridge to try to escape them.

I think the yawn makes this image perfect.  For me, it does.

And this is the last one, I promise.

Well, kiddo, I sure hope your fourth birthday was a good one.  It was a lot of fun for me!

    Sweat-free, Mosquito-free, Free-free!

    Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Whew! I don’t know about you guys, but I think it is getting HOT out there!

Despite living in Texas for all of my years, I just have never grown to love the summer heat (and, yes, I know that the true sizzle of August is yet to come!!!)

So here’s what I am proposing (and, WOW, and I EXCITED!!!!!):  I want to build my studio presence this summer (no sweating! no swatting mosquitoes! no sunburns! no sweat rings under the arms!) and I need models to try out some new things in my in-home studio set-up. I’m offering FREE 30-minute mini-sessions in exchange for a signed model release (so I can use images on my blog and website). You get to choose one free Facebook/web file (watermarked and sized for web; not suitable for printing) from your online proofing album after the session and I’m also offering some crazy discounts on digital files and prints.

This is a great opportunity to document any of the following or more:

    * your kids have cute matching sibling outfits

    *Fourth of July

    * cute swim-theme portraits

    * a milestone (walking, crawling, birthday, graduation, etc.)

    * your anniversary

    * a head shot

    * family pics (want to have holiday portraits done and over with before the fall rush? great time to get it done now!)

    * maternity pics

    * Fathers’ Day pics (or belated Mothers’ Day! Mommy and Me pics are always cute!)

Sound good to you? Give me a call for all the details! 832.427.9181 or email me: info@sabrinakphotography.com  And PLEASE share with family and friends! If I get enough interest in this date, I would be THRILLED to add another date to further build my portfolio!

I’m setting Saturday, June 11 as the big day with sessions at the following times:

    10AM–booked

    10:45AM–booked

    11:30AM–booked

    12:15AM–booked

    1PM–booked

    1:45PM–booked

(I’m allowing 30 minutes for the session and 15 minutes for any background changes between sessions!)

So here’s the fine print (there’s not too much!): A mini-session is great for many things. It is not great for a newborn session. So  babies must be at least 3 months old. If you have a very large family, we may have to shoot in smaller groups or work very up-close (I don’ t have the space for 10 people to be all sprawled out! But I can happily put six smiling faces within the frame!). For families and groups of more than two individuals–I’ll be working with white on white, so this is not the set-up for everyone to wear their matching white shirt!

And, of course, it would be weird to post something on a photographer’s blog without one image at least:

If you think I am excited about some new studio equipment, you should ask my favorite model, for whom the boxes are just the right size for a 4-year-old robot:

And something a little less silly:

(For those of you who have been hearing the profanity soothing hum of my sewing machine issuing forth from my study lately, this is the backdrop I made specifically for a special 4-year-old birthday party coming up.

So, please, help me out by being my model to build my studio portfolio! That way I won’t have to pester my family so much! (And you won’t get so bored seeing my own kids and family on the blog!)

    A Personal Project

    Thursday, May 12th, 2011

I’ve been behind on the blog lately (okay, so honestly when am I NOT behind on the blog. . .) and this time personal projects are the reason why.

I forgot how much energy and time it took to celebrate a first birthday! Photographically speaking, of course!

There’s the outfit. And the cake. And the cake smash. (Or not, in this case!). The photos with family. The party pics.

The list goes on and on and on!

And then there’s the emotional output of your itty bitty little baby newborn sweet cuddly darling baby child turning into a TODDLER (heave, help me! he’s EVERYWHERE!). Overnight (literally), he went from a content little crawler to a hell on wheels kamikaze walker! But still my sweet little cuddle bug when he wants to be!

It’s amazing how quickly a year has passed! And I was happy to have taken a picture of him every day to document the changes. Did I really get one picture EVERY SINGLE DAY? Sadly, no. Sometimes I would forget and do two on the next day. February was a really, really bad month (I missed, like, three days in a row–I think I was busy mopping muddy dog tracks out of my house that entire time).  And how on Earth am I going to display these 365 photos of my sweet boy? They will go into his custom-designed scrapbook, of course. Here’s a sample from his first month with the days and milestones:

I only have 11 more months of this to complete (just kidding. I’ve already done June. So just ten more. And all the pages in between. Sigh)

I know the goal of a true 365 project is to take one gorgeous, stunning, beautiful image every day. As you can see, I was just trying to get “a picture” every day with little regard for all the technical details.  Meh. I’m deciding not to beat myself up about that. Either way, I’m still documenting every day of the first year! I am actually missing the project already! Maybe I will be ready for a real 365 when Jan 1 comes around!

By the way, can you believe my blondie started off with all that dark hair???

And here are some of the one-year images:

The outfit. Custom-designed by the lovely and talented Erika Cain Designs.

The cake smash that wasn’t. Apparently he is his father’s child and does not like icing. Whatever! Zane and I ate it up after K was done!

(Daddy had to smear the cake on his face. He wanted nothing to do with it!)

The treasured first birthday hat my BFF made for Zane three years ago!

Look at all that chunk! My jaw dropped when the pediatrician told me he was only in the 50th percentile for weight.  Seriously??? 50% of kids are BIGGER than my hunka chunka? I was surprised!

And now on to family pics from the day of his party. I had this great idea for a photo booth with lots of fun props, etc. but I had overcommitted myself that day and just dropped the ball. Oh, and K was pretty much done with pictures after the first few. So even though I didn’t accomplish ALL of my first birthday photography goals, I at least got an image of everyone who came to his party with him.

    A few samples:

Yes! That’s me! And, see, in the last one–he’s about ready to be DONE!

And here’s my favorite of all time:

Too much “pass the baby” got this super sad face! Love how Uncle K rolled with it!  And my two darling boys, Z with his dirty socks he wouldn’t take off.

It was a great party! We were thankful to all the family who was able to come! Happy Birthday, Keane!
