About Sabrina K. Photography:

Welcome to my blog! I'm Sabrina Koogler, and I love photography! I always have my nose in a photography book, camera to my face, working on a challenge, workshop, or contest (in between sessions and processing!) becoming the best photographer I can be! I used to teach high school Spanish, and now I'm a stay-at-home mom to two adorable, rascally boys. Sabrina K Photography is my third baby, born of the need to document all of the milestones, wild times, and quiet moments of my children and others. My style is fun and natural. I seek to document the authentic "you" in my images. I offer custom portraiture in the Houston area, and I'm based in Pearland. I enjoy working with natural light and studio lighting--it's fun having a dual-sort of personality! And it certainly keeps things interesting!

    PROJECT 52: Week 13 {album cover}

    Thursday, March 29th, 2012

This one was a stumper. Fortunately, one of the assignments from the wonderful workshop I’m taking right now overlapped this theme. Whew! That took some pressure off.

I know some of the awesome ladies in this circle from The Bloom Forum have interpreted this as the “album cover of my life”. For me, I went with a song that applies to life right now: Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers”. You can view the YouTube Video here.

I had the pleasure of working with a friend’s GORGEOUS daughter for this exercise. I could post every.single.image. we shot but will limit myself (okay, not limiting a ton, but you know what I mean)!

    Here are the lyrics:

    You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere bright and new
    I have seen no other
    Who compares with you

    You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free
    [ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/t/tom-petty-lyrics/wildflowers-lyrics.html ]

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

    You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free

    And here are my images:

Oh wait, did I just share 15 photos? Well, I could have shared about 100. This was such a fun session with such a beautiful girl. What a pleasure.

Now that I made you scroll down through all of that, check out what Misty Seltzer | Lubbock, TX Family Photographer has to show for her {album cover} here.

    Light Workshop

    Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

One of the things I’m passionate about as a photographer is. . .becoming a better photographer!

I might be close to falling into the category of “workshop junkie” but I have to admit that I just learn so much from every workshop I take.

For the past few years I’ve been thinking about taking the Finding the Light workshop. (You can read more about it here). I kept hearing more and more about it and discovering that more and more of the photographers I admire had taken the workshop. And then Detra offered a cannot-miss-it early-bird registration promotion and I just signed up. I didn’t think–I just did it. And I’m so glad I did. Now my kids might disagree. .. they seem to be pretty weary of the camera now that we’re in week three of eight. But I’m sure they will rally!

Here are some of my submissions for the first two assignments:

This is such a favorite of mine. You can also see it featured here with other Week One assignments.

This pretty much sums up how he feels about being my model all the time!

And even my little one had to work for it!

I just can’t get enough of those yellow flowers these days~

Well, just thought I’d let you all know what I like to do in my spare time!!!! And if you’re a photographer considering the Finding the Light workshop I highly recommend it! It’s been a great three weeks so far and I cannot wait for all we’re going to learn in the next five!

    Now accepting hazard pay

So I’m taking this fab-u-lous online workshop from one of the photographers I admire oh-so-much, the amazing Stacey Woods (click on her name to go to her site–why, oh, why do my links not change color??!!). I mean, seriously, I tear up when I look through every blog post. She really gets to the heart of things. Gah! Now I’m tearing up!

And, of course, part of the workshop involves thinking a little differently about how we capture our subjects. “Lifestyle” photography is more on the photojournalistic end of the spectrum (as opposed to “everybody smile and look at the birdie!”). So I was playing around with the boys in Z’s room and K was reading one of my personal favorites from childhood–The Pokey Little Puppy (which, I’ll admit, I honestly don’t like to read. It’s a long book. And not as thrilling as I remember it as a child.)

So here was my little guy in action. He turns 17 months old tomorrow (yes, I’m planning his monthly portrait in my head right now). *sigh* My baby is such a big boy!

“You know, honey, that was Mommy’s favorite book when she was a little girl”

“Well, Mom, I’ll take that into consideration.”

Reading by osmosis. “This is how I get it into my head, right?”

Oh, how I love these chunky, stinky, dirty feet. I resisted editing out the little speck of something disgusting stuck to the bottom of his little foot!

Then he climbed up on the bed and was playing with the phone. See that smile? He SO knows he’s not supposed to play with it!

And this, my friends, is why photography can be dangerous. Kid’s got an arm on him! If you couldn’t make it out, that is the phone flying through the air toward my face (lens, camera). Thank goodness for my cat-like reflexes! LOL! I will now be accepting hazard pay for my services! Once again, I’ve learned my lesson not to give children projectiles (remember Christmas 2009? There were some touch-and-go moments with some wooden blocks!)!

Just thought I would blog something about what’s going on with our family. (I guess I’ve not mentioned that whole Half Ironman we were at this weekend that my husband completed. Or anything else big. But, hey, this is a start!)

Joy of Love, Day 17 and 18

    Staying in:

Here we are as a family enjoying dinner on the back porch. Seems like winter was just a passing thought. Now we can start complaining about the summer heat! And please excuse our back yard. Our “retreat” is pretty much in shambles right now!
    Going out:
Ha ha! You thought I’d post a date night! Enjoying the “great outdoors” (it’s a State Park, so really. . .) is something we like to do as a family. Just staying active!

My boys did a great job fishing! So well that the alligators thought they’d take advantage of the feast and started circling the pier. It was a little too close for my comfort!
